The Surveillance Data Platform

CDC needs an updated informatics environment and efficient informatics processes that support surveillance requirements of timely and accurate data for CDC's public health activities in the United States and globally. A significant need exists for an agile, secure, cloud-based and flexible approach to improve the efficiency of CDC's existing surveillance systems. The solution will consist of shared services efficiently used and made available through a Surveillance Data Platform (SDP).

The Surveillance Data Platform Mission

Develop a platform of services for internal and external partners that enhances the ability to collect, manage, analyze, and disseminate data; reduces unnecessary burden on internal and external partners; and improves surveillance capabilities.

CDC is currently in phase 1 of a multi-phase development process. The SDP will operate as a virtual platform of shared services to:

  • Enhance CDC and partner abilities to securely parse, prepare and share data;
  • Reduce reporting burdens on internal CDC programs and external partners;
  • Improve data surveillance efficiency in public health efforts; and
  • Optimize local, regional, national, and international public health response time.

SDP Key Terms

Platform: Virtual environment that makes services available to users.

Services: People, process, or technology that fulfills a need or request that is reusable and measureable.

Shared Services: People, process, or technology that fulfills a common need or request that is used by more than one CDC program or partner, enabled to be sharable, scalable, and standardized. This includes shared governance of the shared service.

This Space

This space will serve as a collaborative area for the CDC SDP team to document results from partner engagements, high-level requirements elicitation, and develop functional and non-functional requirements. Future developments on this page will include:

  • Links to descriptions of CDC and partner needs related to various shared services, including potential benefits and barriers to adoption.
  • Platform requirements and Shared Services descriptions.

Stay tuned to this page for future SDP developments and links to further information.
